Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to question particular calls from the official, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
