Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
