Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant blasts shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Background: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
This event occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major events preceding this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of further discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
